Important career questions to ask yourself

August 24, 2021    0 comment

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has gone beyond human imagination. From millions of deaths to the collapse of businesses and loss of jobs, COVID-19 will forever be remembered as a monster.

Even as there is renewed hope with vaccination against the virus taking root, there is no drug for the devastation caused so far.

Many people have lost, changed or are thinking about changing careers. The change, in most cases, is not voluntary but rather a survival tactic.

Here are some questions to ponder as we continue to navigate the uncertainties of the times.

What are the lessons from the pandemic?

The virus has ravaged the world for nearly two years now. And it has changed everything in social and economic spheres. Many meetings are now held virtually. Companies have improved delivery capabilities, and teams are working remotely.

Have you learned any survival tactics or skills so far? Have you recognised any vulnerable aspect to your career and what you can do about it? In your leadership as an SME leader or owner, have you learned any leadership skills to match your remote working protocols?

Could it be that you have learnt to be more frugal, especially as many people’s incomes have reduced or collapsed altogether? Are you now more investment focused than consumption oriented?

Work and life balance

Times seem to be tough for many. Remote working has dismantled the boundaries of weekends and working hours. These changes will continue until the virus is gone. In fact, some employees and employers would prefer the status-quo —remote work even after the pandemic has subsided. How are you faring with this new reality where you have to juggle between work and family simultaneously?

Are you able to manage to continue working effectively? Are you ensuring smooth customer care and keeping a motivated remote team?

Are there opportunities you have spotted for team development or customer satisfaction?

The impacts of COVID-19 could continue for a long time but are you adapting well in the mean time?

Are you still employable; are your services or goods on demand?

COVID-19 has wiped out many businesses and jobs. Many small businesses in hospitality, retail and entertainment have been hit the hardest.

What is your situation like? What are you doing to stay relevant if you are a business owner in any of these sectors?

There is enough evidence that tourism was one of the fastest-growing sectors in pre-pandemic Africa, but the story is now different. If your career is in tourism, for instance, what are you doing to reinvent yourself?

Countless number of people have unfortunately lost their livelihoods or aren’t sure they will still have their jobs tomorrow. Are you confident enough of your employability and your ability to sell yourself to subsequent potential employers?

If you run a business, are your services or goods competitive enough in this global economy? Are you putting in place business structures that can stand the test of time?

Well, join us on 25th of August at exactly 4pm (EAT) in this Career and Start-ups Intelligence Series webinar, where we will provide start-ups and young professionals with the opportunity to grasp the changes shaping the global marketplace and digital transformations and the skills required to stay relevant as a business and as a professional.
