Dear reader, as you may be aware, the majority of African businesses have been battered severely by the ravaging impact of COVID-19.
The severity has been captured in several national and international research reports. One such documentation is by the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank, which indicates that over 90% of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across sub-Saharan Africa are suffering from harsh economic impacts due to the pandemic.
The most affected, unfortunately, are women and youth-led MSMEs. According to the report, “Women-led MSMEs have been especially hard hit, with many reporting revenue losses of over 50%, largely due to their smaller size, informality, and concentration in heavily affected sectors like tourism and other service driven businesses.” Businesses in the above category naturally felt the impact more severely due to the social distancing protocols.
The world will not wash away the impacts of COVID-19 in a minute but we can learn new skills and competencies to alleviate them. This is particularly important for women and youth who form the bulk of Africa’s labour force.
To that end, here is an opportunity we would like you to embrace. Human Capital International (HCI) is organizing a two-day virtual summit for the 29th and 30th of June 2021, to address many challenges that MSMEs face.
The dialogue is informed by requests of SMEs owners and employees who attended the 3rd Strategic Leaders’ Summit under the theme: “Agribusiness, SMEs and Digital Innovation within the African Continental Free Trade Area.” This was held earlier this year on 27th February.
HCI holds the annual Strategic Leaders’ Summit mainly to champion stimulating public–private-led discussions that lead to best practices and innovation-oriented dialogue to spur growth within the SME sector in the new digital economy. We believe that by bringing core business players together, MSMEs will learn from each other and improve their operations.
As a company, we have assembled a team of experts for a two-day dialogue in order that both organizers and participants will achieve these post-summit goals as a way of energizing and enhancing the business landscape of Africa, especially among women and the youth. Participants will learn how to harness the potential of the intercontinental market linkages and leverage the latest innovations, technology and best practices to build prosperity while conserving the environment for future generations.
The concept of unlearning and relearning has never been more relevant as in these times of COVID-19. As the futurist Alvin Toffler wrote: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn”
We have assembled core players in the business world to engage and keep mind and body active. The event will help you acquire new and knowledge-based perspectives on what works now and in the future.
