How prepared are you to face the top SMEs challenges in 2022?

Each year presents unique challenges for everyone, both in business and in our personal lives. It is difficult to precisely predict the developments in a year, but that does not take away the need for planning.
By now, a majority of SMEs have sent most of their staff on a break. Before such breaks, there must have been several team meetings where SME executives strategize for the coming year.
Our interactions with SMEs over the years reveal several challenges entrepreneurs navigate to reach their promised land. And for 2022, we anticipate the following will top the business challenges entrepreneurs would be expected to find solutions to.
The question though is, how prepared are they to face them?
Adoption and use of better technologies
Following from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2022 will not be any different from what the business world has seen so far, as far as technological innovation is concerned.

SMEs that will survive the disruptions and be able to satisfy their customers, will have to have the muscle to deal with the challenge of investing in digital technologies. These technologies, depending on your business, could require extra financial investments, product/ service innovation, revised payment methods, and of course highly skilled personnel, among others. You may start your readiness plan with upgrading the skills of the staff to appreciate and implement the needed technology strategy. It is necessary to relax during this festive season, but also spare some time to ponder on the technology needs of your business and undertake the appropriate investments.
Talent attraction and retention
This is the first preoccupation of every executive because every company’s success is dependent on the collective quality of its staff. Therefore it will continue to require creative ways by SME executives to attract, develop the best talents in the market. Motivated staff will be good ambassadors of your company, churn out excellent products and services of high quality and thus attract a high market share. And yet, as SMEs income continued to dwindle in 2021, partly due to external factors, including COVID-19 restrictions, SMEs leadership should be equally creative about how to retain such talent. It is a tough season to be just the leader who can attract and retain staff on a budget. But that is what makes great entrepreneurial leaders.
Building and strengthening strategic Partnerships and Collaborations
A majority of SMEs cannot pay for everything they need to run their businesses. If an enterprise attempts to do that, it will make business operations expensive and eventually unsustainable. That is why partnerships and alliances have become very critical in this post-COVID era. If a communications company, for example, needs to train their managers in leadership, for example, it will be best to team up with a consulting company that offers such services, and in turn, provide the communication infrastructure for that consulting firm.

But for an SME to attract reasonable partnerships and collaborations from other equally capable institutions, it must first work on its internal processes and systems, brand recognition and management as well as the proper alignment of its values and norms. Everyone wants to associate with a good brand, and it is upon you to make your company visible as well as valuable.
Innovation as a constant process
How do you get your staff to think creatively—to challenge the status quo—while keeping your everyday operations running smoothly? This is a constant question that leaders have to contend with. Innovations are the bedrock on which SMEs grow and sustain markets. It does not come cheap, though. It needs a dedicated and motivated team who are inspired by quality thinking. Simply put, it takes creative disruptors to bring about sustained innovation in any enterprise. This is a challenge that will confront leaders in 2022.
Resolve to make 2022 a transformative and innovative year. The quality of your leadership as an entrepreneur, will be your biggest tool to drive your life and business to the promised land in the years ahead if you prepare to face these expected challenges.
