Four key things you must know before you start a business

Uganda is blessed with many entrepreneurs. Twice, the country has been ranked by global agencies as one of the most enterprising in the world.

In 2004 the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report ranked Uganda among the top five enterprising countries in the world, rubbing shoulders with the United States, Brazil and Peru. Thirteen years later in 2017, the Approved Index report, a UK-based business networking group survey ranked Uganda as the most entrepreneurial country in the world.

Beyond the entrepreneurial nature of Ugandans however, is the sad reality of many of these businesses not living to see their fifth anniversaries. Ugandans put more emphasis in starting businesses rather than mining the knowledge economy to beat competition brought about by globalisation and technology to minimise costs of production and reach more markets.

Although many business owners cite high taxation, business informality, expensive loans among others, as reasons for the high business mortality, few highlight entrepreneurial leadership as the biggest factor in business success and failure, especially in Africa.

What then can be done to salvage the situation and grow Ugandan enterprises? Before you start that business, Human Capital International (HCI), an organisation that specialises in entrepreneurship education and mentorship, youth development, and strategic leadership, among others, has developed an Executive Entrepreneurship and Personal Improvement Programme, a very practical approach to equipping you with knowledge to succeed in that business.

The programme will equip you with four innovative and practical ways of starting and growing your business. These include;

  1. Entrepreneurship Leadership: In the training, you will be equipped with practical entrepreneurship leadership skills to gain insight into how to convert your ideas into business and lead others to help you grow your enterprise.
  2. How to start and grow your business organically: For every business to grow and become globally competitive, you need to understand the three pillars of every business; the Enterprise pillar, the Business pillar and the Practice pillar. You first learn how to walk before you run in business to avoid one of the reasons why many businesses collapse in Africa.
  3. Basic Accounting and Cash flow management: You will learn in the programme, the practical reasons why businesses collapse because of lack of basic knowledge in basic Accounting and Cash flow management even though such businesses may be profitable.
  4. How to innovate your way out of business challenges. You will also learn in the programme, how technology and globalisation have become major influencing tools for growing and expanding your business beyond your immediate environment and tap into the 24/7 innovation economy despite your business location. The training will help you to learn practical ways to gain global presence without huge financial investments.
